Skylights 101

Did you know that skylights were used in Ancient Rome, and that glazed (fixed) skylights have been in use since the Industrial Revolution thanks to advances in glass production? They've been around for a long time.

Many people make the error of thinking skylights are a luxury item but they are far more than that. In addition to bringing in almost twice as much natural light as a vertical window, they affect many other areas of our lives.

A study done by the University of Georgia concluded that students have significantly higher test scores in classrooms that optimize day lighting (http://www.coe.uga.edu/sdpl/research/dalightingstudy.pdf). Other studies on how daylight affects our wellness show positive affects in physiology and psychology. We aren't saying our skylights can make your health better or your family smarter, but we do agree that your mother wasn't kidding when she told you that sunlight was good for you.

That to the side, skylights do offer much more light than conventional windows while providing a unique visual connection to the outdoor environment. Today's skylights can work for their keep. A good example is the solar powered ventilating skylight - which helps improve the interior air quality by allowing rising odors and warm air to flow out - and this can effectively reduce the need to rely on air conditioning.

Some of the Key Points regarding skylights include:

Privacy. With homes being built closer together the issue of getting sufficient natural light while maintaining privacy is easily solved.
Quality - you want a well tested skylight that will not leak.
Ventilation - an electric, or solar "fresh air" skylight will open to produce a passive air conditioner. Through the exhaust effect they create, the warm air is drawn up and out, allowing cooler air to flow through out the house.

Tax Credit Information

In 2008 President George W. Bush signed into law, the Emergency Stabilization Act followed by President Barack Obama signing into law, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in 2009.

The combined effect of these two laws provide a 30% Tax Credit on both the purchase and installation of qualifying products in renewable technologies such as; Solar Electric Property, Residential Solar Water Heating, Qualified small wind energy and qualified Geothermal Heat Pump Energy as well as others.

Under these laws Velux Solar Powered Fresh Air Skylights and Velux Solar Powered Blinds qualify under Solar Electric Property expenditures when purchased and installed from January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2016. This tax credit is a direct debit of the taxpayers total tax liability.

When the product is installed, keep your receipts for total price paid (Product and Installation) for one of the qualifying Velux products and attach them to a completed 30% Federal Tax Credit-Manufacturers Certification Statement (IRS Notice 2009-41 suggests the taxpayer is not required to attach this certification statement to their tax return, the taxpayer should retain it as part of their tax records) and keep for your records.

When it is time to file your taxes, fill out IRS Tax form 5695(Residential Energy Credits Form) and submit it with your taxes.
